December 1st, 2005:  Bringing You Up To Date

Saga was a 12 month foal.   Her Dam Soley, carried her for 12 months.   It was quite an ordeal for her.    Soley
became huge in her 11 month.    Steve and I Knew she was going to deliver a very large foal.    Every day she held
that foal it would get larger and larger.

We made the decision to cut back Soley's feed but still continue with a diet which provided all the nutrients she
needed to support her self and foal.    As the foal grew each additional week her gut hung until you could see even
her ribs beginning to show a bit.  We had to make sure she was getting the nutrition she needed with out putting on
any weight.   By the time she foaled, Soley looked pretty haggard.   About that time an inexperienced horse person
made the comment, "you have a skinny horse here".
That's another story!

As usual the birthing went with out a hitch.   Soley is a pro.

When the filly was born Karren named her Saga.   If name and form are to come together, her life will be a Saga to
behold.

Saga is a very confident Icelandic:  She has become rather stoweck as a youngster and definitely knows who
she is and what she is about.   She manages to get along with every horse in the herd, although at times,
walking a way from a potential conflict with in the herd slowly, with her head up high.

She stands tall along with humans but..........does not over step boundaries.    This brings us to present date.

Training

The Hunter FD has decided to start a Mounted Search & Rescue Team.      I will be using a trained horse of mine
to start with.   In Minnesota for a short time I was involved with Meeker County MSAR.

My plan for Saga is to start training her to be  a MSAR horse.    Not just to ride....... but  to sent detect.      This is an
area I have been interested in for about 10 years...............   After Moving from Minnesota I find there is a person
already creating a program for equines at
Whirlwind Farms .

December 3 rd, 2005:
We are headed out to the field to take a few winter pictures of Saga.     I will take some time today to work on
lowering the head.    Eventually,  lower her head when asked by placing my hand on the top of her neck, midway
between the pole and wither.    At a later date,  I will add a work command.   We would like to keep the lowering of
the head separate form the command "to search".    For the first year all training will be done from the ground.
